Ryan P. McCarthy advises employee benefit plans on a range of legal issues under ERISA, and regularly represents union pension and welfare funds in federal litigation, including delinquency collection and withdrawal liability matters. He also represents employees in claims arising under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and state employment, labor, and wage laws.
In addition, Ryan is part of the firm’s investigative team of potential wage and hour class actions.
Before joining the firm, Ryan was an Attorney Advisor with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Administrative Law Judges, where he handled disputes arising under federal whistleblower protection statutes such as the Federal Rail Safety Act, Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century, and National Transit Systems Security Act.
Ryan is a former recipient of the Peggy Browning Fellowship for Workers’ Rights and was a law clerk at the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission during law school. He has experience with claims arising under the National Labor Relations Act, Title VII, Pennsylvania Prevailing Wage Act and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act. He is currently Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, the oldest and largest progressive bar association in the United States.
Ryan comes from a Philadelphia union family, and his practice is guided by his dedication to the labor movement and working families. Outside the office, Ryan spends time with his family and plays ice hockey.
